------------------------------------------------------------------- [+] STUDENT SURVEY SHOWS STUDENTS HEALTHIEST SECTOR OF SOCIETY -------------------------------------------------------------------

THE STUDENT TIMES INDEPENDENT SURVEY OF UK STUDENT LIFE Shows Students are the healthiest sector of the population

27th January 2005: The Student Times published today an independent nationwide survey:

SURVEY FINDINGS:

FOOD AND EATING HABITS: - according to recent Government figures, over 2/3 of the English population is overweight or obese, one of the healthiest sectors of our population is, surprisingly, students. Young adults should aim for a Body Mass Index of between 20 and 25; a figure calculated using your height and weight. The Student Times Survey shows students average a perfectly balanced Body Mass Index of 23. - Female students eat on average 4 portions of fruit and vegetables a day - Nearly 80% of students regularly ate breakfast - Only 3% regularly ate takeaway food

DRUGS: - three quarters of students have experimented with at least one illegal substance during their life but only 4% said this had first been at university. - three quarters of students have used marijuana and one quarter tried cocaine

SMOKING: - less than 20% of students smoke cigarettes (two thirds of these are women).

ALCOHOL: - students are spending an average of £41 on alcohol per week - that amounts to a staggering £2,132 a year - as much as some students pay for their accommodation. - 92% of the students have vomited from drinking alcohol during their time at university.

SEX: - 76% of students had had sex with someone they had met during their studies. - a staggering 86% of these students admitted to having unprotected sex whilst at university. This figure is nearly seven times the national average.

Despite the high percentage of unprotected sex, only 3% of students had attended a Sexual Health Service and/ or received treatment for a sexually transmitted disease. More than 90% of these students were women.

------------------------------------------------------------------- [+] FIND OUT WHAT A ROOSTER YEAR HOLDS IN STORE FOR YOU -------------------------------------------------------------------

Couples across China are rushing to get married in the next few days before the Year of the Rooster, chickening out of what they believe to be a jinxed time to be wed.

This year the lunar cycle begins relatively late, on Feb. 9, which means it will not contain "lichun," the auspicious day that marks the start of spring, earning it the dubious distinction of being a "widow year," or unlucky for wedlock.

There is no doubt that the influence of the Rooster is both powerful and full of uncertainty not just for 'Rooster' people but also on all the other animal signs of the Chinese Horoscope as well as the western Zodiac.

"The influence of the Rooster with its Earth power pedigree makes itself felt everywhere: from the effect of the food we eat and the drink we consume to issues of health, love, relationships and.business!" says Hong Kong Feng Shui expert and astrologer Yip Man-Ho.

Yet the news is not all bad. Traditionally Rooster years are years of hope and opportunity. The Rooster is characterised by energy, excitement and vigour and it brings these traits into the year.

In Rooster, Yip Man-Ho examines the traditional Rooster traits, explains how they affect those born under the sign of the Rooster and then explores their effect on all the other starsigns.

Coupled with an exploration of traditions and a holistic approach to the theory that's the basis of Chinese Astrology Yip gives the reader the tools to prepare for the year ahead in such a way as to be take advantage of the Rooster's positive influence while minimising any negative energy that may affect them.

Rooster years are: 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005.

------------------------------------------------------------------- [+]RETAIL EVOLUTION IS THE KEY THAT UNLOCKS SECRETS OF UK RETAILING -------------------------------------------------------------------

With a history that goes back to the first steps of the Industrial Revolution it is easy to see why the retail scene in the United Kingdom is so sophisticated and, at the same time, so difficult to understand.

Seemingly simple trends are governed by a complex interaction of social dynamics that have slowly evolved over hundreds of years.

Now, for the first time, a book looking at the evolutionary development of John Lewis Nottingham, a shop that for 200 years has been at the heart of the city's shopping culture and ahead of shopping trends in the UK, provides an accessible guide for understanding, and possibly predicting developments in the nation's retail world.

Retail Evolution is a book that examines the historical trends surrounding retailing and how they, in turn, affect shops like John Lewis Nottingham. "Nothing ever takes place in a vacuum. If a trend emerges, or a decision is taken to do something specific in terms of retailing, there are quantifiable reasons for it which usually emerge as the direct result of changes in society," says David Amerland, the book's author.

David, a finance and lifestyle journalist, has direct experience of the retail environment and the way it mirrors social trends. "Take extended shopping hours for instance," he says, "they are made necessary by deeper changes in the underlying structure of society that have brought about the near-death of the traditional 9-to-5 job.

"Writing Retail Evolution was a challenge because although the book is very precisely focused on John Lewis Nottingham the shop itself is a microcosm of what was happening in the country's retail scene as a whole. It's no accident that Nottingham had the first indoor shopping centre in the UK with John Lewis Nottingham as one of its anchor stores, nor is it an accident that they, again, first in the John Lewis chain of stores extended their shopping hours."

Retail Evolution also provides an insight into the John Lewis Partnership which is one of the UK's leading retailers. "It is a case of realising that it is possible for a business to be focused on making a profit and still be a benevolent influence in society," says David, "in the 21st century we are slowly beginning to realise that any business that fails to become part of the community it trades in is doomed to failure. Many businesses, today, are taking active measures to do just that. John Lewis Nottingham and the John Lewis Partnership have been doing this for hundreds of years."

------------------------------------------------------------------- [+] MUSIC FILES BOOK MAY SOUND THE END FOR PAPER BOOKS -------------------------------------------------------------------

The future of paper books may be hanging in the balance with the explosion in 'smart', media-rich, interactive digital books, or eBooks. Leading the assault is a new edition by Cheshire based publisher, Cool Publications, which takes the interactivity of eBooks, particularly instructional ones to a new level.

Will Brazier-Smith's instructional book, Learn to Play the Guitar in 5 Days, is a cutting-edge eBook that fuses the best of the interactivity of the internet with the high-end formatting of the printed page to create a book that not only guides you through the normal words-and-pictures route of learning to play the guitar but also gives you the sound files necessary to tune your instrument and learn to hear what your efforts should sound like.

"Will is an experienced, working guitarist with more than two decades' work under his belt. His ability to break down complex issues on learning to play the electric guitar effectively into easy-to-grasp, practical advice means that within five days you can really go from zero to competent guitar playing," says editor Roy Taylor who worked with Will on the book.

In a cutting-edge production effort Cool Publications have released Learn to Play the Guitar in 5 Days as a fully interactive media-rich book on CD and download format. In the tradition of the cutting-edge publishing house, the CD contains a host of extra features ranging from unique screensavers to help you customise your PC to MP3 and Wave-format tracks composed especially by the book's author, music videos that accompany some of his albums and free digital magazines and Reader software.

The book is further supported by lifetime email support by its author. "It was a big step deciding on this," recalls Roy Taylor, "in the end we agreed that learning to play the guitar tunes in the book was the first step in any music lover's life and there well could be questions they'd feel they want to ask which are outside the scope of the book."

Looking at the sleek way Learn to Play the Guitar in 5 Days works one can now say that the future is truly digital.

The author of Will Brazier-Smith is active on the music front, can talk knowledgeably about the current state of the music scene and can play, if necessary, some of his compositions on air.

------------------------------------------------------------------- [+] THE MYTH ABOUT ILEGAL DRUGS - ARE THEY CAST-OFF PSYCHIATRIC DRUGS? -------------------------------------------------------------------

The founders of Label Me Sane, a California based company announced a nationwide lecture series to educate the public about both illegal and prescription drugs, specifically the psychiatric medication mass marketed today for all types of psychiatric disorders.

Label Me Sane (a non-profit corporation) was established after Alesandra Rain and Andrea Crocker found most drug education lectures gave inadequate information about prescription drugs. Rain, a survivor of prescription drug addiction, understands there is a lack of information regarding psychotropic and behavioral drugs. She is angered about the history of illegal drugs and their connection to past psychiatric use. Rain claims that a manufacturer of a widely used anti-depressant today patented LSD in the 50’s and that some illegal drugs were considered the “wonder drugs” of their time, just like many of the new drugs are marketed today.

She claims over 68 million Americans have used anti-depressants without realizing that many of the adverse effects are identical to illegal drugs. An estimated 1.5 million children and adolescents are on these drugs, representing a 151% increase in the 7–12 age group and 580% increase in the under 6 population. Parents are not informed about potential suicidal feelings that can arise when stimulants are prescribed to treat behavioral issues. The U.S. is one of the only countries that allows direct to consumer marketing. “People are going to their doctors asking for these drugs by name” explains Rain. “We believe many parents feel they are helping their children but not are not aware of the dangers.”

“My lectures don’t tell people not to take drugs,” insists Rain, “but they do encourage people to find out for themselves about side effects and what drugs can do to the mind and body. I want people empowered to think for themselves and look at all the facts. After all, most illicit drugs are cast off psychiatric drugs,” concluded Rain.

Any business, organization or college interested in a lecture is encouraged to contact Label Me Sane for availability.
